Construction work starts at development on former West Herts College campus in Kings Langley

The demolition of a former college building in Kings Langley has been completed, with construction now underway to transform the site into modern waterside apartments. Bellway North London is building 65 new one and two-bedroom apartments off Home Park Mill Link Road, which was previously home to the West Herts College campus.

The one-acre development will be named Millworks to honour the history of the site, which housed papermills for hundreds of years. The five-storey apartment building will also feature mill-style gables and rooflines as an additional nod to the site’s history.

The apartments will each have their own private balcony or terrace and allocated parking within the gated development.

Greg Allsop, Sales and Marketing Director for Bellway North London, said, “this is an exciting project which will deliver a stylish collection of modern apartments within a gated community next to the Mill Stream.

“Before we were able to begin the process of creating this eye-catching new addition to the skyline, we spent months demolishing the old college buildings.

“The site is well-known locally as the place where mills operated for more than 900 years and we have chosen the name Millworks to reflect this, as well as to acknowledge the more recent history of the location as the college site which housed the engineering department.”

Outline planning permission was originally granted for the apartments in 2019, with detailed plans being approved on appeal in February this year. Bellway North London aims to release the first homes for sale at Millworks in November 2022.

Greg said, “this superb location has everything going for it. The development is within walking distance of the centre of the village with all its amenities and is also a four-minute stroll to Kings Langley railway station for trains into Euston in less than half an hour.

“We also wanted to provide buyers with a sense of rural life, alongside apartment living – not only by providing green open space but also by opening up the Mill Stream within the site and creating on-site waterside open space.

“Because of this, we expect these apartments will prove popular with people who work in London yet want to live in a more semi-rural location away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.” The communal area of open space on the site will feature seating and a mix of natural and formal planting, including wildflowers and grassland to provide wildlife habitats.
