£13.7m Greengates Junction redevelopment complete

A £14m investment from Bradford Council to widen Greengates junction is now complete.
The work, undertaken by Leeds-based contractors Howard Civil Engineering, included widening all four entry roads, upgrading signals, and adding a P-loop allowing both left and a right turn from Harrogate Road onto New Line.

Cyclists and pedestrians also benefit from the scheme with the addition of new cycle lanes, pedestrian islands, and more controlled crossings.

Tony Kilbane, contracts manager at Howard Civil Engineering, said: “Greengates junction was a very high-profile scheme with a lot of stakeholders who had to be managed sympathetically. In addition to local residents, there were also commuters travelling daily through the junction and numerous businesses for which it was essential that they remain operational throughout the duration of the works.

“I would like to congratulate our hardworking team who have worked around these challenges, navigated a series of unforeseen obstacles as this scheme has progressed, and produced a final product that the whole company can be proud of.”

“I would also like to thank members of the local community who have been very patient and understanding as we have undertaken the works and adhered to the traffic management measures in place.”

Howard Civil Engineering has since announced they have contributed over £9,500 in fundraising and donations and over 280 volunteer hours to the Greengates community since work commenced on the scheme. There are some outstanding items which will be completed in the coming weeks, including landscaping and bench installation.

Bradford Council will also be working to optimise the traffic signal operation over the coming months by monitoring and evaluating the impact of these improvement works. 

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “We are pleased that such a complex and important highways scheme has been completed successfully. We’ve been getting positive feedback locally since the works have nearly finished.

“Greengates junction is now more efficient, safer and cleaner delivering shorter journey times for road users, including buses. We know such a big project can take some time but we’re confident the results are worth it.”

The scheme was developed by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The scheme received investment through the West Yorkshire Plus Transport Fund as part of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growth Deal - a £1 billion package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
