G’day Mate is the Greeting from Tasmania to Ilkeston
Canal Vue Care Home make friends with people on the other side of the World in a new pen pal relationship with Tasmanian care home provider Huon Regional Care.
So, what’s the ‘John Dory’, the slang for story! Activities coordinator Nat found herself scrolling through posts on Facebook and came across an activity group just for care homes, and that’s where it all started.
Contacting the Huon Regional Care Aged Care facility in Dover Australia, and her counterpart Sue Brooker, together they agreed to develop a pen pal relationship between the residents from each home.
The rest as they say is history and the Aussie and Brit friendships blossom as they get to know each other. Sharing photos and stories from their past, where they are from, the jobs they had, and the family they have. One letter talks about the view of the bay and how they sometimes see dolphins swimming past.
Nat Summerfield, Activities Coordinator at Canal Vue Care Home says: “This is an amazing opportunity for us, we love writing letters, but even better we like receiving them too. We could have sent emails, but where is the fun in that. With a letter we can digest the content, get lost in our imagination, and look forward to composing our response eager for the post man to drop by again with that very special airmail stamp on it.”
