Wildlife Workshops for Whiteley school children during the holidays thanks to housebuilder

School children in Whiteley have been receiving tips on how to look after their local wildlife and environment during their summer holidays, thanks to David Wilson Homes.

A group of 10 pupils from Cornerstone Primary School pupils got the chance to visit the leading housebuilder’s new Forest Walk development for a special Wildlife Workshop as part of a summer holiday club.

The interactive session, designed to share David Wilson’s commitment to protecting wildlife and to promote the importance of sustainability, was arranged in partnership with the RSBP, and the session was hosted by one of David Wilson’s contractors, landscaper Jake Smith from JS Landscapes.

Jake explained how David Wilson is building wildlife-friendly developments across the region and passed on handy tips, all while planting sunflowers with the Whiteley schoolchildren. Each child was also given their very own branded goody bag, complete with watering can, trowel, planter tray and an individual pack of sunflower seeds, along with a colouring book from the RSPB.

Cornerstone School Headteacher, Tim Clarke, said it was a fantastic addition to his children’s learning, and a great exercise to keep them busy over the summer holidays.

He said: “For the children to be able to visit David Wilson’s site for this one-off workshop today, has been fantastic. Not only is it something to keep them entertained over the summer holidays, but it’s also been a great way for them to continue their learning while they’re away from the classroom.

“We always try to communicate the advantages of looking after our planet, especially with climate change being such an important subject at present, and these Workshops have been a great addition to the school’s curriculum. A huge thank you to David Wilson Homes and Jake.”

Anthony Dimmick, David Wilson Homes Community Liaison Officer, said these interactive sessions give the housebuilder the perfect space to highlight its priorities over and above providing homes for local people.

He said: “With much of the UK’s wildlife in trouble, David Wilson is committed to not only providing homes for people across the region, but also for wildlife. And, with the developer continually taking steps to reduce its impact on the environment, it also wants to share this ‘greener’ attitude with the next generation.

“Along with the RSPB, we are thrilled to offer workshops like this one to local school children. It was lovely to see Cornerstone pupils getting involved.”

The RSPB and Barratt Homes have been working together since 2014 to show how new homes can help nature and support wildlife.

The housebuilder is building new homes across Hampshire, including at Forest Walk in Whiteley. The new development will feature a collection of two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, surrounded by countryside. With local schools and a huge selection of high street shops, restaurants, and a cinema nearby, Forest Walk is an ideal place to call home.
