Nuclear rebirth ignites the hunt for skilled workers in the North-East

Global engineering and digital services company Assystem a key partner in the UK’s mission to deliver 10GW of hydrogen capacity by 2030 and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is seeking 450 engineers, technicians, and project managers to support the development of energy infrastructure in the UK.

With its heritage in energy projects due to its proximity to the North Sea, the North-East is a key regional hub for energy transition skills. The region is home to a major pipeline of strategic low-carbon energy projects, including offshore wind farms and hydrogen production plants, which will create more long-term, high-quality roles in locations such as Sunderland.

Today Assystem is seeking more than 20 qualified and experienced individuals to contribute to the development of such projects.

Several of these roles will be open to individuals at the early stages of their career, and to support the development of a skilled workforce in the region Assystem has partnered with Teesside University, working together in a range of areas including collaborative research, knowledge exchange and student placements.

Assystem is focused on coupling its established engineering expertise with digital solutions to accelerate the delivery of the low-carbon projects that will drive Britain’s energy transition. The company is seeking candidates who are committed to the clean energy switch and will appeal to climate conscious talent via its new ‘Switch On’ brand identity.

As an equal-opportunities employer, the business champions diversity in the workplace and offers a dynamic approach to skills and career development. Its inclusive and collaborative working culture, innovative social policy and promotion of employee wellbeing and fulfilment provide an attractive package for its employees.

In 2022 Assystem has 450 roles to fill across a range of energy transition projects in the UK, including on new nuclear projects such as the development of the world’s first Rolls-Royce SMR, and the commissioning of Hinkley Point C, the UK’s first nuclear power plant since 1995.

The company also has roles focused on the development of pioneering new fusion energy technologies as well as major transport and infrastructure projects such as HS2 and the Thames Tideway.

Assystem UK managing director Simon Barber said: “Sunderland is a strategic centre for Assystem, with the North Sea having long provided secure careers in the energy sector to people in the North-East.

“This will continue as the region becomes a low-carbon hub, powered by renewables and focussed on the production of hydrogen, providing thousands of high-quality skilled jobs to the next generation of bright, innovative workers.”
