Leading Structural Engineering and Fabricator – Had Fab - Announces Completion of The Company’s Largest Piling Frame as Part Of Stornoway De

One of the UK’s leading structural engineering and metal fabrication companies – Tranent based Had Fab – has this month announced the load out of one of the company’s largest constructions to date and which will be used as part of the high-profile redevelopment of Stornoway Deep Water Terminal.

The 16.5m long, 3.5m wide and 4m high piling frame was transported by specialist freight from its location in Glasgow earlier this year to the Had Fab yard in Tranent where it has been converted from an H-Pile to a Tubular Pile configuration.

Working to a tight deadline the frame has been fully refurbished and converted so as to successfully install 1,220 diameter piles, up to 44m long on the high-profile Stornoway Deep Water Terminal.

Speaking about the project, Martin Ward, Chief Operating Officer at Had Fad said: “This has been a milestone project for Had Fad and one which has involved true collaborative working to make sure exacting specifications and tight timeframes were met.

“This involved using specialist modelling software – Tekla - to make sure the client was remotely involved in every stage of the project design, and any changes required, together with regular site visits to ensure production was on schedule and on specification.

“Combine this with the challenging logistics of moving such a huge structure from its original location in Glasgow to the Had Fab yard in Tranent, and then onto its final destination in Stornoway, and this has been a truly end to end project for the Had Fab team.

“We are thrilled to have successfully delivered for such an iconic project on schedule and on specification and which will form part of the 20-year master plan setting out the framework for the physical development of this location.”

As part of the work programme Had Fab was responsible for delivering a full pile conversion process including re-setting the width of the structure, installing safety walkways and handrails, manufacturing and installing bespoke roller boxes as well as providing a complete refiguration for Tubular Pile installation.

On completion, the structure was successful transported – utilising specialist hauliers and ferry teams – and is now fully operational on the Stornoway Deep Water Terminal.

The Had Fab work was commissioned by building and civil engineering company, McLaughlin & Harvey who – earlier this year – were awarded the contract for the new multi-purpose deep water terminal.
