New plans for 344 room Gateshead hotel submitted
Revised plans to create a £48m dual-branded hotel at the heart of Gateshead’s popular quayside will be submitted for approval this week.
The move sees an updated proposal by developers Ask:PATRIZIA to relocate the projected hotel, which will have 344 guest bedrooms across nine storeys, to a new 0.5-acre site on land at the corner of Quarryfield Road and Hawks Road. There, a hotel gym will be part of a package of guest services and facilities that will include restaurants, bars and business meeting rooms.
A network of pedestrian footpaths and crossings is also proposed to link the site to Gateshead Quays and the local town centre to the west with way finding signage provided between the town centre and the wider Gateshead Quays development.
Plans come as Gateshead Council brings forward the development of a 1,000-space multi-storey car park. This is currently under construction on the neighbouring development plot to the east to provide parking for the Gateshead Quays and Baltic Business Quarter areas.
If it gets the green light from Gateshead Council planning committee in early 2023, the project will see upwards of 75 full time hospitality jobs created with an additional 40 new roles across the regional supply chain.
In addition, the hotel will provide almost £1m per year in additional local authority revenue and accommodate 210,000 visitor nights per year, delivering a significant uplift in local tourism spend - an estimated £13m annually.
Alex Kennedy, senior planner at the Lichfields Newcastle office, who is overseeing the planning application, said: “This is a great regeneration project that represents a significant contribution to the vitality and vibrancy of an important local economic sector, bringing a vacant site back into use. It’s in a good location, with excellent nearby transport links as well as being within easy walking distance to a range of first-class facilities and services.”
A spokesperson for the developers added: “This is a prestigious project that will not only create new jobs and provide a boost for a great city centre location, but also offer a quality hospitality location where people can stay and experience the city and wider region at its best.”
