Teesside engineering firm moves to new HQ following “ground-breaking” contract win

The boss of a Teesside company which has just won a long-term contract from one of the world’s biggest businesses says a move to the Wilton Centre will help him achieve “the next step.”

TRL supplies highly trained specialists across the globe to work on major construction projects onshore and offshore as well as in the growing renewable energy sector.

It has now won a place on the supplier framework of one of the world’s foremost energy companies and been awarded a multi-year global contract, with the option of an extension, to provide support for lifting and hoisting expertise across all lines of business both onshore and offshore.

TRL’s success has prompted significant changes. It has placed all of its businesses, the training company Teesside Rigging and Lifting, TRL Site Services and the fabrication arm Teesside Bridge Engineering, under the TRL Group and moved its headquarters and commercial team from Stockton to the Wilton Centre.

“We need somewhere that properly reflects the business. It’s the next step,” said managing director Steve Smith who started the company on his own in 2008 and last year employed 150 people as well as providing work for dozens of Teesside contractors.

“Even though TRL works all around the world, we still want to expand our presence in the UK and, especially, on Teesside. We have already been involved with some of the biggest projects in the North East: working on Tees Rep Biomass, Woodsmith Mine and as principal contractor for Huntsman here on the Wilton site.”

He is confident that TRL’s presence at the Wilton Centre, which borders the Teesside Freeport and Teesworks, will help the company win more local contracts, adding: “The Wilton Centre is the epicentre, and we want to be in here amongst it all.

“This is the hub. Everything’s happening around Wilton and there’s going to be a lot more work coming up. We’ve outgrown where we are and we want to be associated on a daily basis with companies going in the same direction as we are.

“There is a huge amount of investment coming into Teesside over the next 10 years and the TRL Group wants to be involved in these ground-breaking projects.”

During the last year a number of other businesses, including Costain, Glacier Energy and the recruitment company NRL, have moved to the Wilton Centre to be closer to Teesworks. As well as the location they were also attracted by the results of a £2m refurbishment.
