Watch some of the world's best tennis players in Newcastle
An unusual racquet sport – with only one site in the entire North East – is set to host some of the world’s top ranked players in the next fortnight.
Real Tennis players from around the UK and beyond are set to descend on Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club, Newcastle, for the Jesmond Dene Cup on May 12-14.
Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club is one of only 27 Real Tennis courts in the UK and among around 40 in the world. Built in 1894, the indoor court is based in a striking building on Matthew Bank, between Jesmond and South Gosforth.
Club pro Mark Eadle says: “Real Tennis should not be confused with lawn tennis. It’s a completely different game, which takes in a mix of racquet sport elements from lawn tennis and squash. Lawn tennis is a descendant of this historic and quirky game.
“It’s a real thrill and pleasure to have some of the world’s best descend on Newcastle. It’s a showcase for the game and an opportunity for anybody to come along to the club and pop in to watch some fabulous games – all for free.”
Players due to attend, include Ben Taylor Matthews, world number 4 ranked; Bryn Sayers world number 6 ranked; Darren long world number 9 ranked; Robert Shenkman, current British amateur champion; plus, another 4 players in the world top 20.
They’ll be playing in a knockout tournament best of 3 sets. Six matches are to be played on Friday; two semi-finals take place on Saturday afternoon; and the final takes place on Sunday afternoon.
The Next Real Coffee Club also takes place at Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club on May 12 from 9am. Any individual or business is invited to come and meet new people and watch some of the world’s top players in action in the Jesmond Dene Cup.
Mark Eadle added: “It’s free but if you would like to donate to the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter charity that would be great.”
