Emergency Disconnection for Intervention Workover Control Systems (IWOCS)

Emergency Disconnection for Intervention Workover Control Systems (IWOCS)

Webtool cutters, designed and manufactured by Allspeeds Limited in the UK, are often used in situations where a quick, safe disconnection is required in an emergency.

One such application is for IWOC systems, where a cutter is strategically installed to enable the operator onboard a vessel, to disconnect the system, which is subsea, from the vessel in times of high seas or storms, which could cause major damage to the subsea equipment being worked on.

One example of this is the contract awarded to supply Webtool emergency disconnection tools for well intervention and workover in the Shah Deniz 2 field in the Caspian Sea. Webtool enables rapid cutting of umbilical multiple fluid transfer jumpers, electrical lines and tension wire, in the event of an emergency disconnect subsea.

Shah Deniz Stage 2 is one of the largest gas developments in the world, operated by one of the majors. Located 70km south-east of Baku, at water depths of 50m to 550m, field development includes drilling 26 gas production wells and laying 500km of subsea pipelines, which will connect ten subsea manifolds and the production wells.

The two Webtools are an integral part of an IWOCS-deployed, well commissioning tool. Within the tool, an umbilical is connected to sacrificial hoses and cable bundle securely positioned in the mouth of the Webtool emergency cutter. Once activated the sacrificial bundle is cut in a single operation within seconds. Designed for deployment for extended periods subsea, the Webtool emergency cutter can be function tested in situ, ensuring the tool is ready for use in the event of an emergency.

The Webtool offers a highly effective way of managing emergency disconnections using a sacrificial bundle that can be readily replaced if needed. It is also one of a few tools to cut tension wire together with cables and hoses and meet required Technology Readiness requirements for this important subsea application.

This is just one example of an application whereby the Webtool cutter is trusted to complete an emergency disconnect, but there are many others, including towing lines, recovery lines and winch systems, where the need for a guaranteed cut, within seconds, is required to ensure the safety of equipment, vessels and personnel.

Webtool emergency cutters are part of the Webtool range of high-performance cutting tools, designed and manufactured exclusively by Allspeeds Ltd in the UK. For the full range of standard cutters, please visit https://www.allspeeds.co.uk/our-brands/products-services/webtool/
