David Wilson Homes presented with top RSPB award for wildlife-friendly gardens in Whiteley

A Hampshire housebuilder has been awarded a top accolade for its commitment to creating homes for wildlife as well as people at its new development in Whiteley.

David Wilson Homes has been presented with the highest standard award – Gold – from the RSPB after the charitable organisation assessed its show home gardens at Forest Walk in the popular community in Hampshire.

To create a wildlife-friendly show garden there needs to be food available for animals and insects via nectar and pollen rich plants, and water needs to be accessible. Shelter and boundaries should also be provided, which enable creatures to move around freely.

The RSPB judge efforts to protect wildlife by using peat-free compost and supports housebuilders in spreading the word about what they are doing as well as encouraging new residents to protect their local nature.

Tammy Bishop, David Wilson Homes Sales Director, Southampton Division, said the developer is committed to safeguarding the environment and the RSPB award recognises its dedication to make its show home gardens a great place for local wildlife.

She said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded gold for our gardens at Forest Walk which are already attracting wildlife. We have also had positive feedback from people visiting the development.

“The gardens here incorporate key elements advised by the RSPB and not only are they now award-winning, but they look great too.”

The show home gardens at Forest Walk include features such as bird boxes, as well as bat boxes, bee hides, hedgehog homes, and insect-loving plants.

The developer and the RSPB have been working together to deliver more wildlife friendly housing since 2014.
