Northern Architectural Association relaunches prestigious Hadrian Awards

Neil Barker, president of the North Architectural Association (NAA) said “We are absolutely delighted to be resurrecting the Hadrian Awards, which was initially established many years ago to celebrate architecture across the North of England. Run by the North Architectural Association (NAA) within their geographical coverage, which consists of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Cumbria and Teesside, it previously attracted notable entries from many rural, town and city practices, and that objective remains the same today.”

Neil continued “the Hadrian Awards always required buildings to be completed for at least two years, allowing the landscape to mature a little and it enabled the ‘in use’ data to become part of the submission. This was largely focused on the user’s opinion – of course now this being ‘In Use’ information about sustainability, climate, energy, and operational issues.”

Neil also commented that “Emphasis on these longer completed projects also often leveled the playing field for what may have otherwise been considered ‘ordinary architectural schemes’ against the more on trend fashion led architecture” He continued “We really hope to continue this aspect during judging and hopefully will see some exemplar conservation, heritage or sustainability projects that may have otherwise gone uncelebrated because they did not pass the initial design test.”

Finally, Neil added “The Awards are of course open to all architectural projects that meet our requirements so don’t be afraid and please ensure you submit your entries via our website by the end of June! We really look forward to judging the projects and the awards night will follow in October. We are also of course hugely grateful to our sponsor, McGovern & Co, and without their support the relaunch of this awards would not be possible.”
