So Is It Really Ok To Not Like Your Child?

A new book making waves in the parenting circles of the UK has been released by Tricia Flanagan. Transcendence Parenting, It’s OK To Not Like Your Child, is a behavioural modification programme, which does not require a specific parenting style/model and will enable others to benefit from her experience and insight. Mum of two, Anna Toms, reviews the book here for Bdaily followers.

“Being a working mum has its challenges. Being any kind of mum has it challenges. In fact, being a parent or someone who cares for a child is challenging.

“So, when I hear about a new self-help book, that is going to change my little devils into beautiful angels, I snap it up. And I am more often than not disappointed. They often aren’t relatable or are too far stretched to fit the suggested ways into our already establish pattern.

“I picked up Transcendence Parenting, It’s OK To Not Like Your Child, with a trace of scepticism and a chuckle at the ironic title.

“But my god, does Tricia Flanagan get it. Not only does she lay herself bare with her own experiences, she highlights day to day issues, brings out some real nuggets based in genius but ground in common sense and makes you stop in your tracks.

“I had never previously considered what my children’s needs actually are beyond food, warmth, safety and love. When you think of need past that, it usually takes me to gifts or belongings, the latest trainers and good WIFI.

“No, Tricia’s well laid out book makes you realise there are a routine eight ‘needs’ that every child has, and every child is different in those needs. The penny dropping, I took on the tasks, filled in the questionnaires and logged behaviours.

“I read the book three times. I will probably read it again. And again. I’m starting to implement changes, think about what I have learnt. Tricia made me laugh. She made me cry. I had light bulb moments. But what I didn’t feel is judged. Or preached to.

“I’m not saying I will now automatically become parent of the year, or my children will be transformed into the best kids in the street. But I have learnt a lot and understand them both a lot better now. I’m excited to transcend as a parent. I’m excited that I now get it and recognise my kids moods and reason for their reactions a lot more. I’ve given my well-thumbed copy to the hubby to digest next, let’s see what he thinks!”

Transcendence Parenting, It’s OK To Not Like Your Child, by Tricia Flanagan is available to buy on Amazon.
