Wolverhampton contractor creates new jobs via seven-figure Lloyds Bank support

A family-owned brownfield remediation specialist has invested £1.8m in new plant machinery to meet demand from customers and take on larger projects, thanks to support from Lloyds Bank.

McAuliffe Group is based in Wolverhampton, with a second site in Hale, Cheshire. The business supports housebuilders and developers such as Moda Living, Bloor Homes, and Taylor Wimpey, as well as local councils, to prepare brownfield sites for redevelopment.

The Group has been heavily involved in key infrastructure projects including HS2 and recently carried out remediation works for Birmingham’s new Curzon Street Station. Founded in 1970 by current group managing director John McAuliffe’s father and uncle, the business now employs more than 150 people.

The firm also offers haulage services and recycling of waste materials for both external and internal waste at its own centre in Bilston. With the support of a £1.8m loan from Lloyds Bank, McAuliffe Group has purchased two Caterpillar 340 hydraulic excavators and two Komatsu D61 intelligent dozers.

The machines replace older models as part of its three-year replacement cycle, which ensures it always has the most modern equipment to serve clients. The newer engines are up to 20 per cent more fuel efficient than the previous machines.

The intelligent dozer is also equipped with high-tech 3DGPS and AutoCAD software, to help staff navigate the site more easily and accurately, as well as performing some functions automatically. The new machinery will enable McAuliffe Group to accept larger projects in the confidence that it will be able to meet the needs of its large construction clients.

In order to help the business keep all its machinery and trucks up to date, Lloyds Bank has provided an ongoing asset finance facility since 2015, currently totalling £7m, from which the latest investment has been drawn.

Thanks to this support, in the past two years McAuliffe Group has been able to spend a total of £7.6m on 38 new pieces of machinery and vehicles, supporting the business to achieve a turnover of £50m in the next three to five years.

Looking ahead, McAuliffe Group has purchased a 3.2-acre plot in the Bilston Urban Village, to expand its existing site on the neighbouring Northcott Road. This will enable the business to expand its operations and create 50 jobs in its workforce.

The contractor is also investing heavily in research and development, and is working in partnership with Cambridge University on remediating ‘forever chemicals’, which do not break down naturally.
