Businesses get advice on how to succeed in award entry writing from experts Osborn

Businesses looking to shine through successful award entries benefitted from a free award writing workshop delivered by PR experts Osborn Communications on behalf of Black Country Chamber of Commerce.

The one-hour workshop, delivered to a hybrid audience attending in person at the City of Wolverhampton College’s Wellington Road campus in Bilston and joining online via video call, shared practical tips and advice for companies looking to make an impact.

Chris Leggett, director at Osborn, which has helped clients achieve 21 award wins from 104 finalist placings in the last two years, gave a series of tips on how firms can make their entries stand out from the crowd.

The event, held on Tuesday (July 4), was launched to help businesses considering entering the Black Country Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, which will welcome more than 500 attendees on Thursday 9 November 2023 at Wolverhampton Racecourse.

The advice shared included ways of meeting award category criteria to score in every assessment section, the importance of setting deadlines for preparing a submission, the use of data to back up claims and the need to stand out in the judge’s minds as they review entries.

Chris Leggett said: “It was a pleasure to speak to an engaged audience about a topic where lots of businesses want to have success but often hold back from entering because of the time commitment needed. We understand the importance of going about the process in a way that is not only effective but also enjoyable, as judges favour businesses with entries that are confident and concise.”

The other speakers included Hayley Hall, Chamber of Commerce event manager. Hayley said: “We were delighted to have so many businesses join us as they prepare to enter this year’s awards, which have a closing date of September 11.

“Following the useful advice presented by Osborn, we hope to see many of them progress to being finalists on the big night in November. The Chamber team are available to support members as they prepare their submissions.”

Simon Love, Client Development Officer at Wolverhampton-based water safety specialists Nant, which won the Chamber’s tech and innovation prize last year, also spoke to the audience. He said: “A lot of businesses have imposter syndrome but you should go for it and enter as it is fantastic recognition and offers opportunities to network to generate new business opportunities.”

Osborn Communications, which won the Black Country Chamber of Commerce start-up of the year award in 2021, produces successful digital, PR and marketing work for a range of leading West Midlands brands and offers training services for companies.

The team has extensive award writing experience and knowledge from having staged internal and external business awards events. They have also assessed entries and selected winners as judges.
