Bellway buys land and starts work on Centurion Chase development in Wallsend

Work has started on building a new housing development that will generate more than £800,000 of investment in services and infrastructure for the Wallsend area.

Homebuilder Bellway recently completed the purchase of the land at Centurion Park in Wallsend, after planning permission to build 215 homes on the site off Rheydt Avenue was issued by North Tyneside Council in April.

As part of the planning agreement for the scheme, which will be known as Centurion Chase, Bellway has committed to making financial contributions towards a range of amenities including primary education, sports facilities, parks and green spaces, and employment and training.

Land and planning manager at Bellway North East, Mark Gabriele, said: “Now that the land purchase has been completed, we are starting work on building this new neighbourhood for Wallsend. Centurion Chase will bring high-quality homes to the area in a range of styles that will work for first-time buyers, growing families, and downsizers.

“And we will be making a significant difference to open spaces in the area through our commitment to funding games areas, sports facilities, parks, and public open space. It will mean the new residents and people from the wider community can enjoy being active and getting outside in their local neighbourhood.”

The development will be made up of 161 two to five-bedroom properties for private sale and 54 two and three-bedroom homes allocated as affordable housing for local people, available through low-cost rent or to purchase as shared ownership.

The site is next to the Centurion Park Golf Course on land that was home to the course’s club house, golf shop, and car park. These golf facilities are proposed to be relocated on land to the north-east of the existing golf course.

Bellway’s scheme includes areas of open space, planting of trees, hedges and bulbs, wildflower seeding and an informal mown path through public open space. The existing bowling green will be retained.
