Phoenix Nights Clinton Baptiste Ignites the Newly Refurbished Empress Building & Ballroom with Laughter

The Empress Building & Ballroom in Mexborough has seen its fair share of legends grace its stage over the years, and on June 10th, it proudly added another name to its storied history. Clinton Baptiste, the much-loved character from Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights, portrayed by Alex Lowe, took centre stage for a stand-up performance that thrilled the audience.

The event was a complete sell-out with over 300 attendees enjoying the show in theatre-style seating, a testament to Baptiste’s popularity and the allure of the newly refurbished Empress Building. The performance is yet another remarkable chapter in the ongoing resurgence of this historic venue, set to host a variety of high-profile names in the coming months.

“It was an unforgettable night of laughter and celebration,” said Jemma Evans, General Manger. “The energy in the room was palpable, and Alex Lowe’s portrayal of Clinton Baptiste was as hilarious as ever. It was the perfect way to commemorate this special date.”

Jason Mace, the CEO of Gala Tent and owner of the Empress Building, shared in the audience’s enthusiasm. “We are incredibly proud of the event and the superb performance by Alex Lowe. The turnout exceeded our expectations, demonstrating the deep connection the fans still have with Phoenix Nights, and the affection they hold for the character of Clinton Baptiste.”

Indeed, the Empress Ballroom has a rich history, having hosted many celebrities including Frankie Howard, Dave Berry, and Freddie and the Dreamers. The refurbishment is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate and revitalise the ballroom’s legacy. Big names like Tommy Cannon, Brian Blessed, Jeff Selling, and Jim Davidson are slated to perform later this year, further solidifying the ballroom’s status as an entertainment hub.

For fans who missed Clinton Baptiste’s sold-out show, they can look forward to another opportunity to catch the comic tour de force. Baptiste will return to the Empress Ballroom stage on November 13, 2023.

Those who have yet to experience the charm of the Empress Building can seize the opportunity to do so this weekend. The 14th and 15th of July will see a tribute to Take That frontman Gary Barlow and Amy Winehouse, offering fans a musical feast they won’t want to miss.

In closing, Mace extended an invitation to all: “Join us this weekend, or any other. The Empress is more than a building; it’s a legacy, a historic symbol of Mexborough’s vibrant cultural scene. There’s always something happening here, and we’re thrilled to keep that tradition alive.”
