Young female entrepreneur ‘empowers girls’ with new luxury sports brand

A Bolton entrepreneur has launched a sports clothing brand with the aim of inspiring women and young girls to continue to play the sports they love.

Jessica Picton, 21, launched She Swings, a luxury sports clothing brand for girls and young women, after experiencing first hand what it’s like to be an aspiring professional golfer and not having access to the type of garments that provide confidence and functional style.

Bolton native Jessica aspired to be a pro golfer and played at county level whilst a member of Hart Common Golf Club, until a spinal injury rendered her unable to pursue her dream. While recovering from her injury, Jessica enrolled at Myerscough College and University to study for a Bachelor’s Degree in Golf Management.

She Swings launched its first ever collection, which was designed by Jessica and made entirely in the UK. The pieces are inspired by Jessica’s personal experiences as an aspiring athlete, as well as extensive research into the relationship between clothing and performance in female athletes, which was the focus of Jessica’s dissertation.

She Swings has already reached thousands of fans via social media platform, TikTok, after Jessica started a personal account during lockdown to celebrate her love of golf.

Jessica commented: “I had developed a real passion for golf and worked hard to compete at a high level, but I constantly found that my game was hampered by the availability of decent gear that both gave me confidence and met my needs from a practical perspective.

“I often ended up choosing male garments over the female equivalents because they were often pink or patterned, which never appealed to me. My degree enabled me to undertake in-depth research with a number of female athletes, on their perceptions and attitudes towards sporting apparel and how it impacted their performance.

“I found that there was a universal issue with the availability of clothing that empowered women to feel and play their best. I wanted to change that and this is when She Swings was born.”

Having raised £20k capital to invest in the development and production of the first collection for She Swings, Jessica continued: “I have given this 100 per cent of my love and energy and will do everything it takes to see it succeed. I believe in the products and the designs and I think that the collection will have mass appeal to girls and women in sport.

“I believe in She Swings and believe we have what it takes to become a household name. I have big plans for expansion and will be adding new collections and products later in the year. The big boys will need to move over, I am coming out swinging!”
