Aruba announces the birth of ArubaKube

Aruba S.p.A, the main Italian cloud provider and leader in data centre services, web hosting, e-mail, PEC and domain registration, announces the birth of ArubaKube, a spin-off of the Polytechnic University of Turin and an Aruba centre of excellence for research, development and innovation in cloud native technologies.

The headquarters of ArubaKube is located in Turin, an area of strategic technological importance. It aims to become a new innovation centre that will attract experts in the sector and be recognised as an Italian reference point for young talent looking to become professionals and pioneers of innovation in this area of the cloud industry. It will exist alongside the Aruba Software Factory - opened in 2019, also located in Turin - demonstrating Aruba’s growing commitment to research and innovation in the area and its expanding collaboration with the polytechnic.

ArubaKube aims to build on and enhance research and development projects in the open-source cloud environment by supporting and providing its expertise to the various communities. The unit will also provide enterprise level support to companies, aiming - for example - to eliminate the risk of vendor lock-in, reducing costs and creating a two-way relationship between each company and the community.

The main objective of this new centre of excellence will be the research and development of innovative solutions that can simplify the management of cloud computing, enabling the simple and dynamic implementation of cloud continuum and edge-to-cloud continuum paradigms. Attention will also be devoted to the promotion, development and support of open-source projects, with a special focus on the Kubernetes platform.

“Cloud computing increasingly represents a fundamental tool for organisations that, by exploiting its advantages, can implement new business models and increase their competitiveness. Applications must be natively designed and developed to operate in the cloud environment and take full advantage of all its distinctive features. This is why it is essential to invest in continuous research and development of projects and solutions designed and born in the cloud”. - commented Marco Mangiulli, Administrator and Chief Technology Officer of ArubaKube – “We are proud to present the birth of this centre of excellence designed to bring together cloud technology with the open source approach, allowing the community to experiment and create open projects and companies to benefit from enterprise-level open source.”

Alongside the focus on ArubaKube, it is worth highlighting Aruba’s commitment to the Liqo project, the open-source solution that allows you to build and orchestrate multi-cloud services creating, in a transparent and dynamic manner, a virtual infrastructure capable of aggregating resources and services belonging to different infrastructures or cloud service providers. In this context, ArubaKube is positioned as one of the major contributors to the project.

“Liqo allows Kubernetes to securely consume resources and services available anywhere, dynamically creating virtual clusters that span across multiple real clusters, creating a virtual, homogeneous and scalable continuum, with a model similar to the peer-to-peer internet.” - commented Fulvio Risso, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin and Chief Innovation Officer of ArubaKube – “Each cluster maintains full control of its own infrastructure, deciding what to share, how much and with whom, using specific policies and criteria. Moreover, the project applies the principles of the sharing economy, so it is more efficient and is also optimal in terms of environmental impact.”

Further ArubaKube projects are to be announced soon including participation in the Myrtus project, which has received €6m funding from Horizon Europe and will focus on artificial intelligence-enabled interconnectivity between ‘edge, fog and cloud computing platforms’.
