Family-run Sunderland catering business opens brand-new café, deli and kitchen
The team behind an established Sunderland catering company has opened a new café, deli and kitchen at Evolve Business Centre in Houghton-le-Spring.
Cheese and Pickle Co, a family run business that has been catering for events and celebrations across the region for more than 25 years, has taken over Evolve’s onsite bistro where people can get a range of hot and cold breakfast and lunch items including two hot lunchtime specials.
Owned by local businessman Trevor Davis, the new café is a welcome addition to the centre which is home to a number of growing software and technology businesses. The kitchen is also used for the catering side of the business and is where food for events of all sizes across the city and beyond is prepared.
Trevor commented: “It’s a really nice spot for us, the centre is modern and clean and suits the needs of our catering business. The response has been great so far and we’re building a strong customer base.
“We serve a mix of hot and cold meals which includes a choose your own salad bar/ deli counter and many hot options each day such as chilli, curry, rice, chips, mince and dumplings, quiche, pies, pasties, toasties, paninis and more.
“The benefit of Evolve is that we not only have a great customer base right on our doorstep, but the kitchen is big enough for us to also manage catering for a range of events. People use us for everything from corporate events and meetings to weddings, christenings, funerals and celebrations.”
The business has been supported by Sunderland City Council’s Business Investment Team, which assisted Trevor and the team with the move to the council owned business centre. As well as Cheese and Pickle Co, the Davis family also run Old Tom’s in Durham city centre and Tin of Sardines in Roker and Durham.
Cllr Graeme Miller, leader of Sunderland City Council, added: “It’s fantastic to have Trevor and the team take up space in Evolve to run their business and serve delicious food to the people and businesses based across the city.
“Evolve is one of our high quality business centres, providing excellent opportunities for those looking to start-up or grow their business, and I’m sure those who work in the centre are extremely pleased to welcome Cheese and Pickle.”
