Pride and sense of purpose for dedicated residents at Romsey care home after day of volunteering.

Invigorated residents at a Romsey care home volunteered to help with jobs and activities for the day as part of a drive to spread a sense of purpose and community around the home.

The initiative was inspired by a month-long work experience program between Woodley Grange care home at Eastleigh College, where young volunteers shared their experiences with the residents - who were inspired to help out around the home.

The residents who participated took great pride in contributing to the well-being of their fellow residents and helped grow a greater sense of community in the home.

Former customer service worker Margaret, was also determined to give something back and was delighted to join the care team for the day.

“Working with the care staff helped me feel more involved with everything that goes on at Woodley Grange,” she said.

“It was great to get an insight into their role and how much they do. I saw how daily care activities work, and it was wonderful to give something back.”

Head of care Rebecca Newton added: “Margaret loved working on and supporting our care team, she appreciated the opportunity and getting to interact with the other residents.”

Val, with her background in the fashion industry, helped with the laundry, while Annette, who had previously worked on a cruise ship, brought laughter and fun to the daily cleaning routine.

John, a practical man who loves gardening and the outdoors, enjoyed working in the gardens, while Mum, with a career in administration, lent her expertise to admin team.

“I love to joke and interact with staff, and helping out with the maintenance provided a sense of enjoyment and purpose,” said John.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to socialise and joke with the other members of staff, and it really brightened my mood.”

Mim added: “I enjoy socialising, and the admin job gave me the chance to socialise with new people, new residents, and develop a sense of worth as well as reminiscing about my old careers.”

Jennie, who has a history of public-facing roles and a caring personality, worked with the activities team, providing sweet treats to her fellow residents.

Jennie said: “Working with the activities staff to provide sweet treats for the other residents put a massive smile on my face and everyone else’s.

“I was smiling ear to ear, and enjoyed the interaction I had throughout the day. I even got to take a few sweets for myself.”

Care home manager Liliana Macieira added: “We wanted to organise this initiative to celebrate the diverse talents and experiences of the residents and to create even stronger connections within the Woodley Grange community.

“It’s wonderful to see our residents come together and give back to the place they now call home.

“Their experiences and skills have made a big difference and it’s clear how much they all enjoyed having such a great sense of purpose.

“Bringing residents closer together and reminding everyone of the importance of finding joy and fulfilment in their daily lives is really important to us and it was wonderful to see everyone having so much fun together while taking part.”
