Transformative facilities showcased at Teesside University’s new health and medical building

A simulation suite to re-create emergency scenarios, life-size digital interactions with the human body, replicas of both home and hospital settings, and super-labs for immersive learning these are just some of the cutting-edge facilities now available to students in the brand-new BIOS building at Teesside University.

BIOS is a £36.9m health and medical building which boasts four floors of state-of-the-art facilities for the science and clinical subjects and will transform the way health provision is delivered at Teesside University.

A fully immersive simulation suite which uses projections to re-create emergency settings such as road traffic accidents, sports stadiums and hospitals – allowing students to interact and engage with an emergency situation as they would have to in real life.

A digital anatomy room with 2x 6ft anatomage tables. These are essentially giant touch screen displays which allow 3D interaction with the human body where students can explore a library of over 1,200 clinical cases, including a variety of physiological conditions and common and rare pathologies. These are now used in medical schools and offer a digital alternative to dissection.

An occupational therapy suite which houses a range of replica home settings to help students understand how to best support patients and aid their mobility. Super-laboratories that can teach 120 students in a single session and provide digital screens and sound throughout the lab for fully interactive learning.

BIOS, which has over 5,000 square metres of bespoke teaching space, also boasts an oral health laboratory, food science and food technology laboratories with industry standard equipment, a clinical hospital ward and a biology suite. It is also 100 per cent for students, with all the space dedicated to their learning and no staff offices in the building.

Professor Tim Thompson, dean of Teesside University’s School of Health & Life Sciences, said: “BIOS is more than just a building – it is the state-of the-art facilities within which provide a real game-changer in terms of our health, medical and science provision. This was our ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ to provide a unique digital offer that will equip our students with the skills, experience and expertise to flourish within the sector.
