South Yorkshire rehabilitation specialist expands with two ‘innovative’ new clinics

STEPS Rehabilitation has unveiled two ‘innovative’ rehabilitation initiatives, offering outpatients access to the very latest in robotic rehabilitation technology and aquatic therapy.

This is the first time that non-residential clients have been able to gain access to these specialist rehabilitation programmes, typically only previously accessed by clients who are long-term residents at the facility in Sheffield.

Designed for individuals facing upper limb impairment due to neurological conditions or complex trauma injuries, the Upper Limb Neurotechnology Group is an eight-week programme designed to provide the opportunity to access intensive upper limb rehabilitation using a unique range of the latest rehabilitation technology.

Using the suite of ‘cutting-edge’ technology available at STEPS Rehabilitation, including Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), robotics, virtual reality (VR), and full-body motion capture, this ‘innovative’ approach offers high-repetition therapy for enhanced outcomes.

The group is suitable for anyone with the following injuries or conditions (not limited to).

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Orthopaedic trauma injuries.

Tailored to individual goals, the programme involves access to multiple devices and a personalised rehabilitation experience. The intensive eight-week schedule comprises three 90-minute sessions per week, utilising advanced technology to achieve therapeutic goals.

STEPS Rehabilitation introduces its Aquatic Therapy Clinic within its purpose-built, hydrotherapy pool. This ‘innovative’ clinic harnesses the therapeutic advantages of water, leveraging warm water for relaxation, buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure for enhancing cardiovascular health, and the resistance of water to effectively strengthen muscles.

Tailored therapy sessions aim to optimise physical, physiological, and psychosocial function. The Aquatic Clinic accepts self-referrals and referrals from healthcare professionals and is suitable for various conditions including orthopaedic, neurological, sports injuries, and rheumatological conditions.

Initial appointments for new clients will consist of a comprehensive 30-minute dry land assessment, followed by a dedicated 30-minute aquatic therapy session in the hydrotherapy pool. Follow-up appointments will be 30-minutes. All assessments and pool sessions are led by one of their experienced Aquatic Therapists.
