Popular Newcastle eatery capitalises on ‘huge’ growth in popularity of Veganuary

A much-loved Tyneside eatery is embracing one of the new year pledges, by creating a number of options for Veganuary.

The first month of the year is now synonymous with people trying out a plant based diet and now that has got a lot easier, thanks to Dot Bagels on Heaton’s Chillingham Road.

The food outlet has come up with a range of vegan specials and will be introducing a new one each week of January, featuring ingredients such as jackfruit and tofu.

The first offer is The Fresh Prince of Portobell-Air, a mix of sticky sriracha portobello mushrooms served with a pickled carrot and mooli slaw, cucumber, spring onions, sesame seeds and vegan mayo.

The new additions will be available alongside the vegan options that are always on the menu such as a plant based version of a parmo and Salt on Chilli Road which features fried chicken, pickled sesame slaw, fried onion and gochujang mayo which is on offer as both a regular chicken and vegan style.

Dot Bagels’ NFC, again featuring Nashville Fried Chicken, hot sauce, slaw and gherkins, also has a vegan alternative.

Diners can also go for Downtown Clover; falafel, hummus, chopped salad, pickled cabbage and vegan mayo, and Banging Bhaji which has an Indian twist, with an onion bhaji, garlic and mint sauce, pickled red onion and mango chutney.

Stuart Young, owner of Dot Bagels, said the aim was to give people plenty of choice: “Veganuary has become huge and although we already offer a whole host of delicious vegan options on our regular menu, it is the perfect time of year to include some specials,” he said.

“It shows people that vegan food can be really tasty and imaginative and hopefully it will encourage more people to give it a try.”
