New £50m East London riverside mixed-use development set to launch in summer 2024

Award-winning housebuilder Weston Homes has announced that construction is underway at its new development Town Quay in Barking, with the launch date set for summer 2024.

The £50m (GDV) mixed-use development will provide 147 newly built one, two and three-bedroom apartments, with a 42 per cent affordable housing allocation and 10,764 sq ft of commercial space, all designed around a public plaza overlooking the Mill Pond and River Roding.

Located off Abbey Road and covering over 60,600 sq ft, Town Quay’s sustainably designed homes and ground floor commercial space are located in three new buildings set around a public plaza overlooking the waterfront.

In partnership with Be First London, working on behalf of Barking and Dagenham Council, 62 of the 147 new homes will be affordable housing, with 29 of the affordable apartments rented units and 33 shared ownership. Designed by PRP Architects, Town Quay will reconnect the town centre to the waterfront.

The architecture of the three striking new buildings, one 11-storey and two 7-storey, has been inspired by the adjacent mill and maritime buildings, featuring pitched roofs with dormer balconies, industrial warehouse-style brick facades in contrasting colours, floor-to-ceiling windows, generously sized balconies and colonnaded raised ground floors.

Pedestrian boulevards between the buildings will open onto the new waterfront public plaza. On the ground floor of the buildings there are parking bays and cycle storage and planned food and beverage commercial units, workshops and artists’ studios.

All apartments at Town Quay will feature contemporary, open plan living areas, opening onto balconies or terraces, and are finished to the highest specification, with ‘modern living’ in mind.

Along the waterfront, immediately to the north of the new Town Quay development, is another Weston Homes’ site, Abbey Quay. The new £350m (GDV) six-acre riverside urban village will provide 1,089 “luxurious” apartments, expansive public amenity space and 22,281 sq ft of commercial retail and leisure opportunities.

Suzanne Aplin, Group Sales and Marketing Director at Weston Homes, commented: “The new scheme joins our other development in Barking, the award-winning Abbey Quay, adding to our offering  in what is one of London’s most exciting and up-and-coming destinations.”
