SeAH Wind’s £650m Teesside factory signs ‘major deal’ with Northern manufacturer

A successful Northern company is looking to expand further on Teesside after winning work on a ‘giant’ factory under construction at Teesworks.

Firth Steels has secured the deal to provide profiled steel for the £650m SeAH Wind monopile manufacturing facility at South Bank.

The company is manufacturing around 200,000 sq metres of profiled steel which will form the roofing and wall covering on the half-mile-long building, which will be the world’s biggest monopile facility when complete and the first of its kind in the UK.

The external building envelope is being manufactured by Firth Steels at its facility in West Yorkshire and the first sections have now been put in place as the project achieves a further milestone. Firth Steels, which has worked on major projects including Heathrow Terminal 5 and The Shard in London, is delivering around 15,000 sq metres of steel each month. 

The company has also recently completed work providing its Protex roof and wall systems on the newly built first unit on the £200m Business Park South at Teesside International Airport. It is now looking for further expansion on Teesside in response to the rapid growth in construction at sites such as Teesworks.

The 40m tall SeAH factory will annually produce up to 200 monopiles which form the foundations of offshore wind turbines. Hundreds are now working on the site, with 750 direct jobs in total and 1,500 forecast to come through the supply chain.
