The rise of remote working
The global shift to remote and hybrid working has reshaped the employment landscape. Here, Jonathan Cowey-Small discusses the benefits and challenges of remote working, the profound impact it can make on employees and firms, and how it has affected his own career trajectory.
The global shift to remote/hybrid working
The global workforce has seen a major transformation with the rise of remote working. Propelled by advancements in technology and the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home is now more accessible and widely accepted. Remote work offers flexibility, better work-life balance, and the ability to work from anywhere with an internet connection. This shift has allowed individuals to spend more time with family or explore new regions without sacrificing their careers. Companies benefit from reduced costs, access to a wider talent pool, and improved employee satisfaction, leading many to adopt hybrid work models.
The rewards of remote work
Remote work has brought significant benefits to employees. Pre-pandemic, only 4.7 per cent of the UK workforce worked from home, but post-pandemic, this figure surged to 46.6 per cent. Many employees report improved work-life balance, increased efficiency, and better overall wellbeing. While some are concerned about the loss of face-to-face interaction, the reduced commute time and flexibility make remote work highly appealing.
A young Mackem’s journey
From a call centre worker in the North East to a radiographer in Singapore, my journey led me to seek a better work-life balance. The demanding hours of radiography inspired my interest in remote work. As I prepare to move to Bali, I look forward to joining the digital nomad community, embracing the flexibility of remote work, and pursuing a healthier balance between life and career.
Is the future freelance?
Remote work offers vast opportunities for improved work-life balance. The pandemic has taught us that work should bring purpose, not just paycheck stability, and the future of work may lie in finding joy in this balance.
