Newcastle International Airport 'best in world'
Airport bosses are full of cheer after landing a global honour.
Newcastle International Airport has been crowned best in the world at the World Routes Conference, in Bahrain.
The site was named overall winner at the ceremony, which bosses say marks the first time a UK airport has secured the accolade.
It pipped Edmonton International Airport, Prague Airport and Brussels Airport to the title.
And officials had double reason to celebrate after the base retained the best in the world title in the under five million passenger category.
Nominated and voted for by airlines across the world, the airport was recognised for its operational excellence, route development, strong relationships with airlines and expertise in marketing airline products and services.
Nick Jones, airport chief executive, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won these awards.
“It is testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams, and we’d like to thank our airline partners for nominating us.”
Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council and chair of the airport’s LA7 shareholders, added: “These are yet more fantastic accolades and well-deserved recognition for those at the airport whose hard work and commitment continues to help it go from strength-to-strength.”
The titles build on the site’s success at the recent 2024 Travel Industry Awards, where it was named UK and Ireland airport of the year.
The honours come after the airport spent more than £20 million to upgrade its terminal, with works including the refurbishment of departure lounge catering outlets and its security search area.
