Sunderland graduate-turned-global boss inspires students

An entrepreneur has gone back to his former university to inspire learners of his journey from graduate to global boss.

Florian Hildebrand returned to University of Sunderland to talk about his business story.

Speaking at the university’s St Peter’s Campus, he shared how Sunderland equipped him for success.

Florian, who earned his degree in mechanical engineering in 2013, has founded two companies that have raised more than €100 million and employed more than 200 people.

In 2015, he co-founded Qualifyze, which uses a global digital network to help pharmaceutical firms manage supply chain quality and compliance.

He then co-founded Greenlyte Carbon Technologies in 2022, which focuses on developing pioneering direct air capture technology to combat climate change.

Florian said: “Without the University of Sunderland, I would never have had the opportunities which brought me to where I am today.

“When I was a student, the super-modern facilities, the programme and the connections with industry, really equipped me with all the skills I needed for my career, paving the way for what came afterwards. 

“I hope the students who came to my talk took away self belief, to trust in themselves and be brave – to know they have the guts to go out there and do what they want to do.”

Dave Knapton, associate head of school of computer science and engineering at the university, added: “I remember Florian as a student who made the most of every opportunity.

“Thanks to Florian for taking the time out to inspire those following in his footsteps."
