Marriott set for 'milestone' 200-bed Teesside hotel
An international hotel operator is in talks to launch a 200-bedroom Teesside venture.
Fairfield by Marriott wants to open a base in Middlesbrough.
Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen has branded the blueprint a “big milestone” and a “huge boost to our ambitions” for the town.
He added building work on the hotel, which would sit in the Gresham area of Middlesbrough, could begin next summer.
Middlesbrough Development Corporation’s board is due to meet this week to discuss and approve Cycas as the hotel’s preferred operator and Wates as its preferred construction contractor.
Mayor Houchen, who is also Middlesbrough Development Corporation chair, said: “To have Marriott coming on board in the heart of Middlesbrough is a vote of confidence in what we all want to achieve.
“We’re making real progress in getting a grip of the town centre and giving it the investment, vision and action it needs and deserves.
“We’re working hard to put everything in place to ensure we can get spades in the ground to build the hotel as soon as we can.”
The hotel forms part of a wider Gresham redevelopment plan, led by the corporation alongside property developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property, which officials say will create new accommodation that will help attract up to 4000 jobs to the town.
The first phase aims to create five mews houses, more than 230 build-to-rent properties and a student accommodation block for more than 400 people.
Neil McMillan, iMpeC director, added: “We plan to deliver a transformational project, providing new accommodation that will help attract and retain students in the town and support its growing digital, professional and advanced manufacturing sectors.”
