Historic Ouseburn site revitalised into luxury homes
A historic site in Newcastle’s thriving Ouseburn Valley has been transformed into a luxury development of seven townhouses, blending the area’s industrial past with modern design.
Newcastle-based developer Modo Bloc has created The Ropes, a collection of four-story homes marketed by Hive Estates. Each three-bedroom townhouse features design elements such as floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed brickwork, and private terraces with views of the River Tyne, offering stylish urban living for families and professionals.
Once part of the 18th-century St. Lawrence Rope Works, the site played a crucial role in the region’s shipbuilding and ropemaking industries. The ropery was known for producing wire ropes, including those used in the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Michael Mortimer, managing director of Hive Estates, said: “This development is unique not just because of its design but because it pays homage to Ouseburn’s industrial heritage.
“Working closely with Modo Bloc, we have worked hard to preserve the heritage of the area with industrial-Scandi interior design while also offering something exciting for today’s buyers.”
Although most of the original industrial buildings in the area were demolished in the mid-20th century, the new development integrates their history while bringing a fresh, contemporary approach to housing in one of Newcastle's most vibrant areas.
