Funded engineering courses boost Sunderland businesses

A new initiative is offering fully funded engineering courses to help Sunderland businesses “upskill their teams” and meet evolving industry demands.

Seta, a Washington-based not-for-profit group training provider, is delivering 26 fully funded courses through the Sunderland Skills and Inclusion Programme (SSIP), including training in electrical engineering, welding, mechanical maintenance and safety.

Seta’s workshops feature industry-standard equipment and experienced tutors with extensive engineering backgrounds, providing businesses with access to advanced, practical training.

Robin Lockwood, chief executive of Seta, said: “We’re proud to be a partner in the SSIP and to be helping the project to achieve its aims of driving productivity in the Sunderland economy, developing skills and supporting inclusion.

“The SSIP project is a fantastic opportunity for Sunderland-based companies that need to upskill their teams to stay competitive and open new routes to growth.

“We’re excited that our courses, which are shaped to industry requirements, will be available to businesses and their employees through this initiative.”

Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and managed by Sunderland City Council on behalf of the Sunderland Partnership, the £2.56 million SSIP project, which is being delivered by the University of Sunderland, runs until March 2025.
