Leeds studio launches motion capture facility

A new creative facility is set to drive innovation, skill development and opportunities in the North of England creative sector.

Tell Studio, a Leeds-based social impact documentary company, has launched Goblin Academy, an industry-standard motion capture studio made possible by a £50,000 grant from Innovate UK’s Creative Catalyst 2024 fund.

The facility, located in Aire Street Workshops in Leeds, is equipped with cutting-edge technology from Vicon, a global leader in motion capture systems, used in major projects including Star Wars and the Assassin’s Creed franchise

Owen Seabrook, Tell Studio creative director and Goblin Academy founder, said: “We proposed a high-end grassroots-focused mocap facility aimed at training newcomers to the industry and discovering new creative applications with motion capture, as well as servicing demand for Northern game development and VFX teams.

“We’re incredibly grateful to have won the grant and excited to begin showing the region what’s possible with motion capture.”

Goblin Academy aims to offer introductory workshops from January and explore partnerships with brands and initiatives, including the Bradford-based inclusive dance non-profit Project Resurgence.

Operating in an ‘alpha stage’ until February 2025, the studio invites collaboration from performers, production teams, and creatives to shape its evolving service range.

Martin Howland, Project Resurgence co-founder, added: “I believe that motion capture is the future of dance training.

“This technology provides the ability to review a dancer’s movements in 360 degrees, allowing us as teachers to help students hone and develop their skills with far greater accuracy.”
