Newcastle & Gateshead Monopoly launched

A new edition of the boardgame Monopoly celebrates Newcastle and Gateshead with iconic landmarks and local organisations taking pride of place.

In the special edition, train operator Lumo occupies the iconic King’s Cross Station spot, representing Newcastle Central Station and featuring on the game’s cover with one of its electric trains crossing the River Tyne.

Martijn Gilbert, managing director of Lumo, said: “As a proud Newcastle business, we're thrilled to be part of this iconic game that celebrates our vibrant community and many fantastic local organisations.

“It’s a great opportunity to contribute to Newcastle’s rich heritage and show our support for the region we’re so passionate about."

The updated game, which follows the original 1999 Newcastle and Gateshead edition, also includes local landmarks such as Grey’s Monument, The Glasshouse and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, alongside charities such as The Alan Shearer Foundation and St Oswald’s Hospice.

John Keen-Tomlinson, custom games executive at Winning Moves UK, said: “This is a new board for a new generation.

‘We were wonderfully spoilt with choices when putting this Monopoly board together.”

The game was launched with events at Newcastle Central Station, where Mr Monopoly himself boarded a Lumo service to celebrate the occasion.
