Siemens Gamesa secures £1 billion Hull blade deal
A wind turbine blade maker has secured a £1 billion-plus deal.
Siemens Gamesa will make 64 rotor arms for ScottishPower’s £4 billion East Anglia TWO offshore windfarm.
The 115-metre long blades will be manufactured at the company’s Hull factory, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailing the contract as another step forward in making Britain “a clean energy superpower”.
The agreement marks another significant coup for Siemens Gamesa, which has already supplied blades to ScottishPower’s East Anglia ONE windfarm and will support the company’s East Anglia THREE development.
Based off the Suffolk coast, officials say East Anglia TWO has potential to create enough green electricity to power almost one million homes, with its trio of farms tipped to support the energy needs of more than three million households.
Darren Davidson, UK and Ireland vice president for Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa, whose Hull plant employs around 1300 staff, said: “The UK is the first leading industrial country to simultaneously phase out coal power and be a leader in offshore wind.
“If we’re to achieve our net-zero targets, it’s mission critical this momentum is maintained.
“As well as delivering the blades to power the UK’s energy transition, our factory in Hull is acting as a catalyst for economic growth and green jobs across the region.”
Prime Minister Starmer added: “By acting decisively and early, the UK has an opportunity to lead the world in the industries of the future — working in partnership with businesses like ScottishPower and Siemens Energy — creating real energy security, cutting energy bills and building jobs and supply chains in the UK.”
The contract comes after ScottishPower announced a doubling of its UK investment – from £12 billion to £24 billion – between 2024 and 2028.
Keith Anderson, the company’s chief executive, said: “Getting more projects like East Anglia TWO off the blocks quicker will turbo boost the UK’s supply chain, giving companies like Siemens Gamesa the confidence to invest in facilities like its Hull blade factory.
“We’ve doubled our investment and are ready to play our part with the Government as it gets barriers out of the way to build more projects like this.”
