Aji Alese given Foundation of Light honour
Sunderland AFC defender Aji Alese has been announced as the official PFS Player Ambassador for the Foundation of Light, further strengthening its mission to inspire and support communities across the North East.
Aligned with the EFL Week of Action, which highlights the positive impact of football clubs on local communities, Alese’s role will focus on promoting education, health and social inclusion. His involvement aims to deepen the Foundation’s impact, encouraging young people and families through the unifying power of football.
Expressing his enthusiasm following the appointment, Alese said: “It’s a big honour. It’s something that fans, kids, and people will look towards and I’m someone that they can look up to. So, I’m really proud to be chosen.”
The appointment comes as part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to address community challenges and foster well-being in Sunderland and beyond. As the charity arm of Sunderland AFC, the Foundation of Light works tirelessly to deliver transformative programmes that benefit children, families, and the wider community.
Lesley Spuhler, Foundation of Light chief executive, added: “To have players visiting the Beacon of Light and engaging in our programmes is very important.
“It not only emphasises the strong bond between Sunderland AFC and our community but also highlights the players' dedication to making a positive impact off the pitch.
“Aji's commitment as our new player ambassador will see him champion our initiatives, engage with participants, and inspire others to support our work across Sunderland and beyond."
Ben Parker, PFA community liaison executive, added: “It goes without saying, the importance that the players have. They are role models.
“It’s great to see players and kids interacting – players come away feeling really inspired, really engaged and kids leave with smiles on faces. Ultimately, that’s what it’s about.”
