Ghouls for good: Durham ghost walks raise funds for charity
A pair of spine-tingling ghost walks in Durham combined history, mystery and charity, raising vital funds for a local cause.
Organised by Walkergate and Durham’s ‘Ghost Whisperer’ Andrew Ross, the sold-out events on October 27 and November 3 attracted history buffs and thrill-seekers alike, raising £800 for Moving On Durham, a charity that supports young people at risk of homelessness in County Durham.
Starting from The Bishops’ Mill at Walkergate, participants embarked on a two-hour tour through some of the city’s most haunted spots, including Elvet Bridge and The Dun Cow Pub. Tales of famous spirits such as the unfortunate musician Jimmy Allen and the notorious serial killer Mary Ann Cotton captivated attendees.
Andrew, a finalist in the Durham Tourism Superstar 2024 awards, added his signature flair to the ghostly tales, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all who attended.
He said: “I am delighted we had such a fantastic and fully booked turnout for both events.
“Getting to share tales of the hidden history and ghosts that roam Durham is as thrilling as it ever was for me, and reading the positive feedback online from those that attended has been equally delightful.”
The events were managed by Walkergate, a leisure scheme overseen by Cushman & Wakefield on behalf of DTZ Investors, who were thrilled by the overwhelming success of both events.
Sandra Stewart, site manager at Walkergate, added: “Supporting a local charity such as Moving On Durham is close to the hearts of the tenants at Walkergate.
“The great work from Andrew Ross and the community’s generous spirit is truly inspiring.
“Moving On Durham has been helping vulnerable young people find safe homes for over 30 years, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact these funds will have on those who need it most."
The funds raised will directly support Moving On Durham’s crucial work in helping vulnerable young people find safe housing, showcasing the power of community spirit in tackling local challenges. In response to the generous donation, Moving On Durham said: “Moving On Durham are so thankful to Walkergate and all those involved in the recent charity ghost walk.
“The funds raised will make such a difference to the lives of the young people we support.”
