Artist's first solo show to light up Baltic
A North East artist is set to debut her first major solo exhibition, showcasing a thought-provoking exploration of spirituality, identity and the human connection to the cosmos.
Mani Kambo, a Northumbria University graduate, will present Ax•is Mun•di at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, running from December 7 to June 2. This multidisciplinary exhibition, inspired by her upbringing and cultural heritage, marks Kambo’s first institutional show.
Drawing on themes of mythology, spirituality and personal symbolism, the exhibition features an entirely new body of work created during a seven-month residency at Baltic.
Using textiles, wood engraving, and totemic symbols, Mani crafts a metaphysical environment where audiences are invited to explore connections between the earthly and the divine.
Mani Kambo said: “For Ax•is Mun•di, I’ve pushed the boundaries of my practice, experimenting with new materials and techniques.
“The support and resources at Baltic and Northumbria have been invaluable, allowing me to think big and create an immersive exhibition experience. I’m excited to see how audiences interpret this new body of work.”
The residency, part of Baltic’s Artist Development Programme, offered Mani access to studio space, technical expertise and curatorial support to develop this ambitious project.
Sarah Munro, director of Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, added: “As a local artist and graduate of Baltic’s Artist Development Programme, we’re incredibly proud to present this new commission from Mani Kambo.
“Her work has been critically acclaimed for drawing on her own lived experiences, as well as themes of spirituality and mythology.
“Mani is a great example of how Baltic is supporting and nurturing local talent, while providing a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work to national and international audiences.”
The exhibition is supported by Foundation Foundation. For more information, visit baltic.art.
