Great Run Company to run Windermere Marathon
Gateshead-headquartered Great Run Company will deliver the historic Windermere Marathon for the first time as part of its popular Great Run series.
Scheduled for 15 June, the marathon will align with the Arla Great North Swim, creating a weekend celebration of endurance in the Lake District.
Known for its scenic course around Lake Windermere, the event will feature updated start and finish locations while retaining its iconic anticlockwise circuit of Lake Windermere through Hawkshead, Newby Bridge and Bowness-on-Windermere.
The Brathay Trust, who had announced in September that they would be unable to deliver the marathon in 2025, will remain as the lead charity partner, with places available for participants supporting the charity.
With entries now open, the Windermere Marathon, which was first staged in 1982, joins an impressive portfolio of Great Run events in the Lake District, which includes 13 Valleys Ultra events as well as the Arla Great North Swim.
The Great Run Company, which most notably organises the annual Great North Run, will now aim to use its profile and running event delivery expertise to bring the Windermere Marathon to a wider audience.
Colin Murphy, Great Run Race director for the Windermere Marathon, said: “The Great Run Company is delighted to have inherited the Windermere Marathon from Brathay Trust.
“We are lucky to have the opportunity to keep such a historic event going, and to continue to raise important funds and fitness in the local community.”
Paul Foster, chief executive of The Great Run Company, added: “We are already working hard to deliver a landmark event, during a weekend where Great Run operates in the Lake District, as part of our much-loved Great North Swim event, and we are pleased to be able to inform runners that they can once again run a marathon on the same course in Windermere in 2025.
“This will allow us to continue to work closely with the local community and those who have taken part in Windermere Marathon before and attract new participants to this beautiful event.
“It’s important to us to also be able to help Brathay Trust continue their incredible fundraising, and I’m pleased they are the lead charity partner for the Windermere Marathon 2025.”
