Royal spotlight shines on Foundation of Light
Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh hosted a special lunch at St James’s Palace in London to celebrate the achievements of Sunderland AFC’s official charity, the Foundation of Light.
The event brought together supporters and champions of the Foundation, reflecting on its transformative impact since its launch in 2001.
For over two decades, the charity has reached more than half a million people across Sunderland, Durham and South Tyneside, investing over £40 million into community programmes.
From keeping young people in school to helping individuals find employment, supporting mental health and promoting active lifestyles, the Foundation’s initiatives have fostered resilience and ambition across the North East.
Guests at the Palace were inspired by stories of change and were given glimpses of future initiatives, as the charity reaffirmed its mission to support those in need.
The Duchess, a patron of the Foundation since 2003, highlighted the enduring importance of its work in transforming lives and communities.
Sir Bob Murray CBE, chairman of the Foundation of Light and former chairman of Sunderland AFC, said: “The work of the Foundation is only possible thanks to the generosity and belief of our supporters.
“The event at St James's Palace allows us to celebrate not just what we’ve achieved, but also what’s to come as we continue to grow and expand our reach.
“The Foundation of Light extends its deepest gratitude to The Duchess of Edinburgh for her continued patronage and inspiring leadership and we are grateful to have had this special occasion to celebrate those who continue to offer the charity their unwavering support, including our dedicated staff and volunteers, who remain integral to our ongoing success.”
