Kamal brings national award home to Newcastle
A Newcastle-based Indian restaurant has earned national acclaim, highlighting its dedication to authentic cuisine and exceptional service.
Kamal Indian Restaurant, located on Stanhope Street, was ‘Highly Commended’ in the North East Asian Restaurant of the Year category at the Asian Curry Awards 2024.
The prestigious ceremony, held at London’s iconic Grosvenor House Hotel, celebrated culinary excellence across the UK, attracting over 1,000 guests.
Owner Umayr Saleem, who accepted the award on behalf of his team, said: "This recognition is a testament to the hard work and passion we pour into our food every day.
“It's a proud moment for us and for Newcastle's vibrant food scene."
Established in 1992 and revitalised by its current owners in 2011, Kamal blends traditional Indian recipes with modern touches.
Its menu features authentic dishes like biryanis and richly spiced curries, crafted with high-quality ingredients to offer a true taste of India. Patrons can also bring their own alcohol, adding a bespoke and personalised element to their dining experience.
The family-run restaurant offers more than great food, with a private function room for up to 70 guests, making it a go-to venue for special occasions and corporate events.
Umayr added: “My father runs Saleems Takeaway in Gateshead, and I learned everything from him.
“He has been instrumental in my business and has taught me the value of good quality food and excellent customer service.
“We have a lot of regulars who visit us every week and we even get pop stars in from time to time when playing at the nearby Arena.
“The award is an amazing thing for all my staff and customers. We were selected by mystery diners who judged us on our food and customer service, and we received votes from our customers to who we are very grateful.
“I’m delighted to bring the award to Newcastle.”
