Huge freezer warehouse work no tall order for ISD

A new milestone in cold storage has been reached with the completion of what is believed to be the UK’s tallest high bay freezer warehouse.

Gloucester-based ISD Solutions has finalised its largest-ever project, delivering the exterior cladding for Magnavale’s state-of-the-art facility in Easton, near Grantham.

The £130 million warehouse stands at an impressive 47.5m and boasts capacity for 101,000 pallets.

Designed for energy efficiency, the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) facility features a renewable energy-powered operation and advanced insulation solutions.

Coldstore construction experts ISD, part of The P & M Group, installed nearly 60,000m² of Kingspan Cold Store panels, along with 18,500m² of floor insulation, ensuring maximum energy performance.

The project also includes a low-bay freezer section, an office block and 20 loading dock pods equipped with bespoke dehumidification systems. Strict logistics and precision were required to meet construction demands within the confined site footprint.

Jason Denning, director of industrial and commercial projects at ISD Solutions, said: “We are extremely proud to be involved with such a landmark project and to be one of the trusted ‘client direct’ contractors for the scheme.

“We believe that the finished building, with its energy efficient design, physical proportions and unique aesthetic features, sets it apart from all previous similar facilities and will raise the bar for future temperature controlled ASRS buildings.

“Safely installing the freezer envelopes at up to 47m height, within 3.5m of adjacent working buildings, whilst avoiding disruption to their operation, took a great deal of careful and highly co-ordinated logistical planning between all of the main trades.

“We know that the UK is severely lacking in frozen warehousing space, and we also know that high-bay automated warehouses are what is needed to make up this shortfall.

“So, we’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with Magnavale to help meet that demand.”

Set to become operational later this year, the facility highlights ISD’s expertise in cold storage innovation and addresses the UK’s growing warehousing needs post-Brexit.

This marks the third collaboration between ISD and Magnavale, bringing their combined project portfolio to nearly £20 million in the last three years.

Jonathan Gagg, director at Magnavale’s parent company Sadel Group, added: “Once in operation, we expect that the Easton development will transform frozen storage and value-added capabilities across the UK, allowing our partners to cut unnecessary cost, risk and complexity within their cold chain.

“We thank the team from ISD Solutions for their exceptional work on this project and we look forward to working with them again in the future.”
