OnPath Energy powers ahead with £1 billion plans
A Sunderland-based renewable energy developer is set to invest £1 billion in clean energy projects across the UK over the next five years, as it aims to “accelerate the transition to net-zero”.
OnPath Energy, formerly Banks Renewables, officially opened its new headquarters at Chase House, in Rainton Bridge Business Park, with Education Secretary and Houghton and Sunderland South MP Bridget Phillipson cutting the ribbon.
Ms Phillipson said: “I’d like to welcome OnPath Energy to Houghton and Sunderland South, the opening of their new headquarters will be welcome news for local people.
“Clean power will unlock billions of pounds in investment and re-industrialise Britain with thousands of skilled jobs across the country.”
Following its acquisition by Brookfield Asset Management in 2023, OnPath Energy has expanded its onshore wind, solar and energy storage portfolio, with ten operational wind farms across Scotland and northern England.
The company has already created more than 30 jobs this year, with bosses saying that “hundreds of skilled, sustainable green jobs” will be created as part of OnPath’s ambitious plans to become the UK’s leading land-based renewable energy developer.
Richard Dunkley, chief executive at OnPath Energy, added: “The new Government has been very firm in its commitment to accelerating the transition to net-zero.
“We will be contributing towards reaching this destination by aiming to invest around one billion pounds in building more of the renewables infrastructure the UK needs over the next five years, a plan which will in turn create and support hundreds of skilled, sustainable green jobs across the UK, including within the North East.
Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, added: “We are delighted OnPath is growing its presence in Sunderland.
“It is a business that has a commitment to supporting the city and its people, through its responsible approach as an employer, as well as by working with a local supply chain, and we’re proud to be able to join them as they celebrate their relocation to Houghton-le-Spring.”
