Durham set for greener waste transport service
A lower-carbon waste management service is being rolled out in County Durham promising “much greener services to residents”.
The venture features the introduction of Iveco Bio-CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles, reducing carbon emissions by 80 per cent annually compared to diesel trucks.
Bio-CNG vehicles, powered by sustainable biogas, also significantly cut nitrogen oxide emissions.
The endeavour is being delivered through a partnership between Hargreaves Logistics and Durham County Council.
Councillor John Shuttleworth, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for highways, rural communities and community safety, said: “We’re pleased to have worked with Hargreaves to implement the new bio-gas vehicles into the county’s waste transport operations.
“The new vehicles will help us to reduce the carbon emissions of our overall waste management.
“This initiative makes up part of our Climate Emergency Response Plan, where we have set out actions to achieve ambitious targets of reducing emissions within our operations and of the wider county.
“By incorporating lower carbon vehicles into the county’s waste transport fleet, we can provide much greener services to residents.”
The investment aligns with Hargreaves’ broader commitment to achieving net-zero and adopting future-ready technologies.
Rob Vickers, managing director of Hargreaves Logistics, which operates a range of services including earthmoving, M&E, facilities management, engineering and land development, added: “By introducing a low-carbon option we can lessen the environmental impact of essential logistics, while adding value to our service, helping our clients work towards their decarbonisation goals.
“The availability of biofuels is increasing, and prices are more competitive now.
“As the infrastructure develops for alternative fuels across the country, switching to greener options becomes more feasible, enabling our company to lessen the associated environmental impact.”
