Mullen Stoker appoints new trainee accountant

Mullen Stoker has strengthened its team with the appointment of trainee accountant James Imrie, reinforcing its commitment to investing in future talent.

James, 23, from Harrogate, has been with the County Durham and South Shields-based accountancy and IT firm for four months and will begin his Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification later this year as he works towards becoming a fully qualified accountant.

A graduate of the Open University with a degree in business management, finance and accounting, James previously worked as a business development manager before joining Mullen Stoker.

He said: “I am really enjoying the job, even more so than I expected.

“Everyone has been so welcoming, and I feel like I have settled straight in here.

“At the moment I am learning the ropes and have been doing things like accounts preparation and filing, tax returns and company secretarial work, and supporting the account managers to get a feel for what being an accountant entails.

“In the coming weeks I will start the ACCA qualification, which I’m hoping will take no more than four years after which I will be a fully qualified accountant.”

Founded 15 years ago by Gary Stoker and Neil Mullen, the firm has seen year-on-year growth.

While primarily known as a chartered accountancy firm, it also has a dedicated IT consultancy division and employs 15 people across its Durham and South Shields offices, serving clients across the North East.

Neil Mullen, co-founder and director of Mullen Stoker, added: “James has fit straight into the team and is already proving to be an asset to the accountancy team.

“He’s picked up the processes straight away and we’re keen to see his development continue when he begins his formal training to becoming a fully qualified accountant.”
