Newcastle and Helsinki partner for net-zero push

Newcastle is set to strengthen its climate action efforts through a partnership with Helsinki.

The two cities have signed an agreement under the Net Zero Cities’ Twinning Learning Programme, aimed at sharing expertise and accelerating progress towards carbon neutrality.

Through the 18-month initiative, Newcastle City Council will gain insights from the Finnish capital’s Systemic Heat Shift programme, which is cutting emissions by optimising district heating systems.

The partnership will also explore community engagement strategies and the role of artificial intelligence in achieving net-zero goals.

Councillor Juna Sathian, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for climate and transport, said: “Cities, as major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, are uniquely positioned to lead the way to a sustainable future.

“This is why initiatives such as the Net Zero Cities, Twinning Learning Programme are vital for providing a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing across Europe.

“We’re incredibly proud to be joining forces with Helsinki.”

Funded by the European Union, the programme will facilitate knowledge exchange and site visits between the two cities, helping Newcastle apply best practices from Helsinki to inform its own climate strategy.
