Family firm creates ‘lasting legacy’ with rebuild

A Yorkshire-based construction firm is set to rebuild a Halifax hospice it first constructed more than 30 years ago.

Elland-based Marshall Construction has been appointed to deliver Overgate Hospice’s new £12.75 million base, with work set to start in the spring.

The family-run firm, led by chief executive Simon Marshall, was originally responsible for building the hospice in 1993 under the leadership of Simon’s late father Chris Marshall.

Simon said: “We are absolutely honoured to be partnering with Overgate Hospice once again on such a monumental project.

“For us, this is more than just a building project – it’s a deeply personal one.

“My father was proud to be part of the team that built the current inpatient unit, and I know he would be incredibly proud to see us involved in helping to create this new facility.

“This project is so much more than bricks and mortar; it’s about creating a lasting legacy for the hospice, for the community, and for the families that will benefit from the care it provides.

“We can’t wait to get started.”

The facility will feature private en-suite bedrooms, larger family-friendly spaces, a multi-faith reflection room and tech-ready rooms with internet access and smart TVs.

The project follows a recent break-in at the hospice, which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. However, the community has rallied, raising nearly £10,000 in support.

Tracey Wilcocks, Overgate Hospice chief executive, added: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Marshall Construction.

“Their long-standing connection to Overgate makes this partnership particularly special.

“After a rigorous selection process, it was clear Marshall Construction has the expertise and commitment to deliver our vision, but also shares our deep-rooted passion for ensuring the very best hospice care for our community.”
