Material Evolution appoints R&D director
Ultra-low carbon cement pioneer Material Evolution has appointed Nigel Shewring as director of research and development, strengthening its commitment to revolutionising cement production.
With over 25 years of international R&D experience in the coatings industry, Nigel brings expertise in materials science and commercialising sustainable solutions.
He will lead the Middlesbrough-based company’s efforts to develop next-generation ultra-low carbon cement formulations, driving Material Evolution’s goal of removing a gigaton of carbon from concrete production by 2040.
Nigel will oversee a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and researchers, foster collaborations with external partners, and secure funding for innovative projects.
He said: “I am thrilled to join Material Evolution at such an exciting time for the company and the industry.
“Cement production is one of the largest contributors to global CO2 emissions, and I look forward to helping accelerate the pioneering R&D work already underway.
“Together, we can make a tangible impact on the future of construction – and on climate change more broadly."
Material Evolution launched its MevoCem product in 2024 at its Mevo A1 Production Facility in Wrexham, achieving an 85 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional cement.
David Hughes, chief scientific officer at Material Evolution, added: “Nigel’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Material Evolution.
“His extensive experience in materials science and leadership in R&D will be instrumental in advancing our sustainable cement technologies.
“We are confident that under his direction, our innovations will continue to set new benchmarks for the industry, driving both environmental and economic benefits."
