CyberNorth helps tackle cyber gender gap

A “transformative” initiative aimed at encouraging more young women into cyber security careers is set to launch in the North East, backed by funding from Innovate UK.

CyberNorth’s ‘Influencing the Influencer’ project, launching in March 2025, will equip careers advisors and computer science teachers “with the essential tools and techniques to guide students” as it aims to “close the gender gap in cyber security”.

Led by CyberNorth chief executive Danielle Phillips, the initiative aims to challenge gender disparities in a sector where women hold just 17 per cent of roles nationally.

A new signposting portal will provide case studies, study routes and employer connections.

The project will also feature CPD events in Newcastle and Darlington, giving educators a deeper understanding of industry opportunities.

Danielle said: “We are very excited to launch this project; there are 15 cyber career pathways but there is still a knowledge gap that exists around pathways and opportunities for young girls and women to access a rewarding career in the sector.

“This transformative programme alongside a host of vital resources has the backing and support of a number of female senior leading figures in the sector and through sharing their stories as part of the campaign we hope to nurture and inspire the next generation of future cyber security leaders from the region.”

“The statistics are there in black and white; representation of women in cyber security still remains low, and boosting female representation is imperative so that teams are in the best possible position.”

With high-profile advocates such as Mads Howard MBE, manager in the office of the CISO at Sage, the campaign hopes to shift perceptions and inspire more women to enter the growing cyber security field.

Danielle added: “There are so many women trailblazing in the sector likes Mads, and it’s crucial that young girls hear these stories and are encouraged to pursue careers in the cyber security industry.”
