Filmmakers ride wave with inspiring documentary
A new documentary is set to shine a spotlight on an inspiring athlete’s journey from beginner to national competitor, captured by a Tyneside-based film crew.
South Shields-born Jimmy Simpson, 24, who has cerebral palsy and quadriplegia, set out to compete in the UK Adaptive Surfing Championships.
His journey has been documented by South Tyneside’s Red Stamp Productions, owned by Connor Langley and Michael Lambert, which followed his progress from training on local beaches to the competition in Bristol.
With funding secured in late 2023 to support a socially impactful project, Red Stamp filmed Jimmy’s training alongside instructor Nick Jones at South Shields Surf School, showcasing the amazing determination and resilience behind his success.
Connor said: “As soon as we met Jimmy, we knew he was the one we wanted to work with.
“He’s an incredible person who just refuses outright to be knocked back and, as he told us about his surfing dreams, we couldn’t wait to capture his progress and tell his story.
“It involved some dicey shoots. Waist deep in water, navigating the surf, but I never once heard Jimmy complain about it, so neither could we.”
Initially planned as a short film, the documentary has evolved into a full-length feature, celebrating Jimmy’s achievement and the South Shields community.
A premiere screening is planned in South Shields once the final edit is complete, bringing together all those who played a role in Jimmy’s inspirational story.
Councillor Margaret Meling, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for economic growth and transport, said: “An opportunistic funding bid has turned into an uplifting and inspirational South Shields story.
“It perfectly encapsulates how our community comes together to support each other and sometimes create wonderful things.
“I cannot wait to see this film; I’ve got my popcorn ready and will soak up every minute.”
